I use to attend the shows in the 80's and 90's and what a big difference. The jets seemed to fly alot faster then recent shows. I would prefer to see more fighter jets than the older planes. Will the show be opened with the sound barrier being broken? Which plane or planes will break the barrier at the show?
Thank you

Looks like they're only running a Saturday show this year on the 17th, and apparently no Thunderbirds this year. Edwards, however, is always a good time, and it's always a treat to go to the base. One of the fastest airshows I've ever been to due to the ample airspace they have to play in. Looking forward to get back after a couple years off.

Hey Chad, where did you hear the info about just a saturday show? Just got back a few weeks ago from the airshow at Langley AFB, in Virginia. If you want to see a excellent show go to langley also and check the airshow and base out, it was a wonderful experience. You will not be disappointed at all. One of the best shows that I have ever been to.
Thanks in advance for the info.

Hello,Will the show be on Oct. 17 & 18?
What time does it start on the 17th?
Thanks, Herb Scott Sr. EDITORS' REPLY: According to the Edwards web site, which we found by Google search:
"The Flight Test Nation 2009 Air Show & Open House is scheduled for Oct. 17. Gates open 7 a.m. and flying begins at approximately 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The open house is slated to close at 6 p.m. so guests have ample time to enjoy the more than 40 static displays scheduled to be on the flight line."

I have been to this show a couple of times and it is the best I have ever seen. Is Gen. Chuck Yeager going to be there this year? It is always great to see him break the sound barrier. Only drawback, it is freaking HOT!!

I've been to a Edwards airshow once and was disappointed. I went several times to the airshow at Fallon and hailed them as the best ever. I hope Edwards has improved.

I have always been facinated by jet fighters and aircraft in general. I plan to attend the airshow on 10/17/09. What aircraft are scheduled to fly? I too enjoy the new planes versus the old planes.

i have been going to the airshow at edwards for many years, there has been great shows and not so great shows, but good or bad it's still worth it.

Found out about this weekend's Air Shows, etc. on television this past week & would love to come; but having a hard time getting there. Many pilot friends seem to be busy with other things. And my husband David can't really do much walking due to bad knee surgery a doctor did to him over 7 years ago.We do usually go to Reno each September & I go to the Reno Air Show; but due to him losing his job after 35 years, we had to cancel this last year...:-( I will try to get there one way or another this weekend; I really enjoy Most Air Shows. So please keep me informed on any other Air Show anywhere here in California & I'll really talk to my friends about it & maybe a Classic Car group of us can get together & go to it together. Our group is the "Rodfathers", many of the men in that Car Club were in the Vietnam War &; talks about many planes, etc. at the Car Shows & get togethers. So please do keep me in the loop on future Air Shows.
Sincerely, Mrs. Kathy Brening-Ray

Why is the airshow down to only one day this year? Lots of people I know have to work on Sat and make it a family day on Sundays, bummer!

I went to the open house today. It was the biggest joke of an event I have ever gone to. Not because of the aerial demonstrations. Seeing the F-22 fly was the most incredible thing I've ever witnessed. But the lack of planning for getting to the base, parking, security and everything else was just a joke. We live only 90 miles from the base. Left at 8:00, hoping to be there for the 10am opening fly-by. We barely made it to the entrance gate by 10am. Then it took another 3 hours to park, get through security, ride the shuttle bus and get to the static displays. 5 hours in total is a bit absurd! Once we were there, it was ok. THey did run out of a lot of food items also, but at that point, we expected that.

I've gone to the Edwards Open House since my children were just babies. Yesterday my oldest son (age 26),his wife, and myself spent over 2 hours getting onto the base. The show of course is always fantastic, and I was happily surprised that Chuck Yeager came out of retirement once again to start the show with his famous sonic boom. I really do love seeing all the static displays since I worked on the F-22 and the White Knight 11 (which is an odd combination). But the worst, and I've got to say Horrendous thing about yesterday's show, was getting traffic out. Grant you, there's only 2 ways to go. It took us 11/2 hours to get out,
friend of mine with small children and his elderly mother it was 3 full hours! Cars were overheating and so were peoples sense of humors. Edwards needs to have 2 days and more proficient traffic personal.

Edwards '09 'Open House' was the worst disappointment my family & I have ever experienced in our lives in our many years of attending air shows all over the state - over 3 hrs driving thru base to get to parking (approx 5 miles) & over 3 hrs to try to leave (approx 1.5 miles out)- besides losing a tank of gas waiting in those lines we lost over 6 hrs of our lives we'll never get back - there was absolutely no one in charge - none of the service people knew what was going on around them - they had no clue (which I do not fault them for) ie where to even get gas - hundreds couldn't find their cars when leaving - hardly any signage of how to leave - fights & arrests (people were so tired, hot, exhausted) people passing out from lack of water & the heat - cars out of gas, broken down, overheated - people cutting into car lines that others had been in for hours & the service people did nothing - absolutely the worst ever - trying to get their normal 2 day show jammed into a 1 day show without thinking of the circumstances - what were they thinking - oh that's right they weren't - I truly believe a 5th grader could have done better - DO NOT EVER GO THERE WHEN ITS A 1 DAY SHOW - they have NO IDEA what they are doing - totally unprepared - leaves one wondering if this the way they do everything!!! My son was interested in signing up but not now - how embarassing for them!!! We only got to see a few hrs of air show time - the rest was trying to get on & off the base - we never wanted to leave a place so badly in our lives!!!

The air show was EXCELLENT! Next time I could go for less paratroopers and more of the F-16's the F-22 AWESOME! Yes, parking and getting out was a problem and should be better organized for next time. It took us 1 1/2 hours to get out of the parking area but at least there were porta-potties every 10 feet. There were more cars than roadway available to move them. Next year they should plan better. Remember, this is after all and Air Force Base, they can't block every lane at every entrance just so we can get home. I'd do it all over again next time. It was a great show and great day!

Two buddies and I have frequently made the trip to the air show from Woodland Hills, CA. This will be our last year attending. Not only was the time getting in and parking very lengthy, the exit was the most frustrating. Many of the shuttles were no longer in working order at about 3 P.M. which meant we had to walk. One of my buddies is handicapped. We had trouble locating our car because the parking staff changed the configuation of the lots. We parked in a "handicapped area" with a proper placard on the mirror. Upon return we searched for 45 min. because the staff allowed several other rows of cars to park in fronto and alongside our original spot. Luckily we found an officer in a small electric vehicls who helped us locate the car.
The final problem was trying to exit. There weren't sufficient staff to properly direct traffic so we had to drive up and down aisles to locate the proper exit. The final insult was that we were directed to an exit that forced to drive 20 miles out of our way. We wanted to return to L.A. via Rosamond but we were directed to highway 58, which directed us to Bakersfield.
The flyovers were great but the poor organization of the parking egress and ingress made this our last year of visiting the open house.

Hi I've always enjoyed the airshows.I for one come out not only to see the jets fly but to also feel them. No more of just one pass of the B1 bomber. Give us low speed, wings swept back, full after burners. Give us a show, not a brief glance. You want and have to be there to fully appreciate its presence. There's no other feeling/sound in this world. Let us enjoy! Who authorized the painting of the SR-71? It looked like a plastic model! I can start up a fund raiser to get the correct paint for such a historic plane by next year's show.It had to be an embarrassment to the famed decorated pilot who flew the plane to set up and have it used as a backdrop. Don't save the newest/latest plane for last,It should be in the middle of the show.I left as it was in the air, the exiting of the show was unacceptable. This show would discourage any 1st time visitor. Please listen and accept our views constructively.Thanks.

Where do I start with this debacle they called an air show. I attempted to attend this event with my 8 year old son and a couple of his buddies and their fathers. They had been talking about it for weeks before the event. I live 45 miles from the base and got stuck in the most horrendous traffic jam I have ever seen. After 3 hours and frayed nerves we abanded our quest much to the disapointment of the boys, we had to settle for the AirPark at Plant 42. I will get them to an airshow but never EAFB again. The command staff at this base showed no regard for the tax paying public that foots the bill.

I would just like to address everyone that chooses to insult how the Air Force runs the Air Shows. We work very hard and very long to get all of the details worked out so that the general public is able to come and enjoy a very remarkable experience. The planning for the Air Shows usually start about a year before it even happens, and it is very hectic leading up to it. The week before the show EVERY single last member of the base is cleaning and making everything look absolutely amazing for the public. The actual day of the event all members of the base are up and working by at least 1:30-2:00 in the morning so that we are ready to open the gates for everyone by 7:00 a.m. Yes, I do understand that the traffic is horrendous, it's hot and everything might not run as smoothly as most would like for it to but there are over 300,000+ people that come out to the bases for an Air Show and there are only about 2,000 members that are assigned to the base. Please remember that we work VERY hard to provide everyone with this wonderful event with what resources we have and we are out there too working hard. In the heat, the traffic, with disgruntled people on a Saturday no less and most will come in on Sunday as well to do the massive clean-up that must take place after 300,000 people traffic through the base.

What is the website to go to, to buy tickets? Or get more info? EDITORS' REPLY: Specific questions about any of the airshows should be sent directly to the airshow organizers. A Google search will reveal each airshow's website.

"No air show and open house is tentatively scheduled for Fall 2011."

The last time I was at the Edwards AFB airshow was my worst airshow experience EVER! No USAF Thunderbirds and the worst traffic conditions this side of "Dante's Inferno"! Other than that, mediocre flying displays and incredibly expensive "refreshments and cuisine". At least there was a free water! I was scared away last year and wonder if they've improved any in the traffic/crowd control area? Is there even a show this year?

The Edwards AFB website states no show for Fall of 2011.
Posted by Robert G on October 14,2011 | 04:54 PM
No. No open house in 2011, per Edwards website.
Most likely, not a bad idea. Spare the airfan a ton of frustration with the parking , and exiting situation.
Air Force personell need a few years to figure out the parking situation a open houses there.... Give them another two years.

It was my first time attending an airshow and I loved it especially the Pearl Harbor simulation...but yeah traffic was bad. I lived in Palmdale during that time and it's only 1/2 hr away but yeah it took a little bit longer to get there. Now I live in Las Vegas and attended this year's Aviation Nation 2011 this weekend, and let me tell you traffic was much better--in fact there was no traffic. But if I'm ever in California again I would love to go to an airshow in EAFB.
