In a Mix photo chronicling the 1907 St. Louis race, pilot Alfred Leblanc stands in the Île de France’s gondola. (Second from left is A. Leo Stevens, accomplished balloonist and exhibitor in parachute and human cannonball shows.) Sleep in the small basket was impossible; fortifying themselves with canned meat and sandwiches, Mix and Leblanc stayed awake for 41 hours.
