On January 28, 1960, the Communication Moon Relay program used giant antennas in Hawaii and Maryland to transmit photographic facsimiles and teletype data that bounced off the surface of the Moon and were received in Washington, D.C. In Hawaii, Naval personnel on the USS Hancock spelled out the experiment's success.
