Adopted by the U.S. Navy in 1957, the Vought F-8 Crusader was a single-engine, 1,000 mph dogfighter that downed 19 MiGs during the Vietnam War and served as an accurate, deadly strafer. The XF-8A at the Museum of Flight in Washington is the prototype airplane, BuNo 138899, which made its first flight on March 25, 1955.
