Old and Older
The quaint scene from a postcard, above, bears a caption describing an ascent in a 35,000-cubic foot gas balloon by members of the Aero Club of New England (ACONE), organized on January 9, 1902. ACONE's history page states, "The aero club of New England is in fact the oldest aeronautical club in the Americas, and the second oldest in the world, predated by the Royal Aero Club of London." ACONE was a sober-looking group by the time it was officially incorporated in Boston in 1907. The Aero Club of Buffalo (New York) claims to be even older, however -- its members began meeting in their High Wheel Club as early as 1879, though the group didn't incorporate until 1910.
