Underground Airliner
The planning commission of Kern County, California, has given its approval for Swiss artist Chris Buchel to bury the 153-foot hull of a Boeing 727 some 38 feet below his property in Boron, for a "land-based art project" at the edge of the Mojave. The site is near a mass airplane boneyard, which has inspired artistic photographers such as Troy Paiva. Scrubland over the buried 727, though, will be restored to a "natural" state, if you disregard the 400-foot tunnel excavated from the parking lot to the underground exhibit, named Terminal (which will include working restrooms). Commissioners considered Buchel's argument that his work may provide "layers of social and political commentary to permeate within a uniquely contemplative space." Out of respect for the environment, the exhibit will be limited to 15 visitors per week.
