Out in the Cold
Cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin holds up a flare during winter survival training just completed in Russia. Twenty astronauts and cosmonauts from Russia, the United States, Europe, Canada and Japan learned techniques for surviving in the wilderness following an emergency landing, in temperatures as low as -27 degrees Fahrenheit. While Tyurin isn’t scheduled to launch to the International Space Station until next year, fellow cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Anton Shkaplerov are spacewalking outside the orbiting laboratory today, moving a robotic crane from one module to another, and installing new debris shields on the outside of the Zvezda module.
