A Man, A Plane, A Canal-Like Thing
This month in 1911, Arthur and Georges Gonnell made a splashy debut with their Uniplan, but the idea quickly drowned. Seen here in Juvisy, France, the combination airplane, canal boat, and parachute was meant to capture the best of each mode of transportation. From the side it looked more like a graduate's mortarboard, though the Gonnells were not lauded for their scholarship.
