Spin the Wheel
The drama surrounding the James Webb Space Telescope budget and timeline probably won't go away any time soon, but at least the team can prove they're making progress. The first instrument was completed and delivered today, handed over to NASA during a ceremony in London and soon to be transported to the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. The Mid-Infrared Instrument was built by a consortium of European Space Agency members and, as Thomas Henning, director at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy writes, MIRI "will allow us to peer inside the clouds where stars and planets are born - and witness such cosmic births in unprecedented detail." The image above shows MIRI's filter wheel that will allow JWST to take images in different spectra.
