Independence Day Racing

We were poking around the Library of Congress' collection of photos on the Flickr Commons site, wondering if perhaps an interesting aviation-related Independence Day image might present itself. No such luck, but we did find this old gem, marked "Heinrich's Aeroplane, Governor's Island 7/4/14." Between help from Flickr readers and a July 5, 1914 issue of the New York Times, the Library deduced that the image features "the Heinrich Model D monoplane, flown by aviator Albert S. Heinrich (1889-1974), on day of a race above the Hudson River, New York on July 4, 1914." Remembering our early aviators and how they shaped our lives today is certainly a nice way to to celebrate this country's long history.
