All-Metal Fighter
On this day in 1935, the prototype of the Seversky P-35 took its first flight. The single-seat fighter was the first all-metal construction aircraft in the U.S. Army Air Corps; it also featured retractable landing gear and an enclosed cockpit. The image above of the SEV-1XP prototype was probably taken in Wright Field, Ohio, according to the National Air & Space Museum. The only remaining P-35 is on view at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.
