New York's Blimp Parade
If you were in New York City yesterday and happened to look up, you would have seen a blimp parade above the Hudson River. The four blimps (40 percent of the U.S. total blimp population) represented were the MetLife Snoopy 1 blimp, the DIRECTV Starship blimp, the Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey blimp, and the HP Hood blimp. The Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield blimp has its own Facebook page, which includes a list of fun facts. Did you know, for instance, that the 132-foot-long blimp is 10 feet longer than a NASA space shuttle orbiter? The site (somewhat disingenuously) asks if a blimp travels "Faster than a speeding bullet?" The answer would be no. Blimps can reach speeds up to 50 miles per hour, while a bullet (depending on the caliber of the gun) may travel up to 4,000 feet per second.
