Many Firsts in Flight
Twenty years ago today, September 12, Endeavour launched STS-47 from Kennedy Space Center. It was the 50th space shuttle mission, and carried the first African-American female astronaut into low Earth orbit. Mae Jemison, a mission specialist and medical doctor, performed microgravity experiments with the crew, which also included the first Japanese astronaut to fly aboard the shuttle, and the first married couple to fly on the same mission together.
