Endeavour's Last Ride

Space shuttle Endeavour is starting its three-day journey from Kennedy Space Center to the California Science Center in Los Angeles today. The image above is a screen shot of the piggybacked 747 flying low and slow over Houston, to give the space workers a chance to wave goodbye. It landed at Ellington Air Force Base at a little before 12 p.m. Eastern, for a pitstop on its cross-country tour. The flight was delayed a few days due to bad weather around the Gulf, but after take-off this morning, it performed flyovers of Kennedy Space Center, Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, and NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana. At daybreak tomorrow, Endeavour will keep heading west, making another pitstop at Biggs Army Airfield in El Paso, Texas, followed by flyovers of White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico and Dryden Flight Research Center, before landing there. Finally, on Friday, the shuttle will leave Dryden, perform flyovers of NASA's Ames Research Center, Sacramento, and the San Francisco Bay area, before heading south to land at Los Angeles International airport around 11 a.m. Pacific. Endeavour will make its 12-mile journey through the streets of L.A. on October 13.
