Awaiting New Year's Dawn
Here at Air & Space HQ in Washington, D.C., we're just 12 hours away from the new year. For those of you out celebrating tonight, your skies might be lit up with fireworks and party lights; for others, the glow of the television amping up the coming ball drop; and for some, perhaps just the glow of candle lights on the faces of those you love. However you choose to usher in 2013, it's nice to take in one last wide view of home the way we'll leave it in 2012. NASA's Earth Observatory has a fantastic series of images of the planet at night from the past year. Above is a view of just the western hemisphere; you can find more hemisphere, including an animation, here, and a lovely flat map view of the world here. To everyone spinning around on this little globe with us: Happy New Year.
