Looking Homeward
While looking for some vulcanoids, Mercury-orbiting spacecraft MESSENGER caught this photo of home. Here Earth (with its North Pole pointing downward) and the moon shine brightly in this 10 second exposure from 114 million miles away. This isn't a brand new image -- it was taken May 6, 2010 -- but we like the reminder every so often that we're all just riding a little ball, floating around in space together.
