Throwing Light on Orion
With so many things in the universe taking advantage of the wide spectrum of light, it seems a shame our human eyes are stuck seeing only a narrow band of visible light. Luckily the telescopes we point at the sky can see almost whatever we want them to. The European Southern Observatory's Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) in the Chilean desert released this new image of the Orion Nebula this week. The outside regions are the visible light image, but it's overlaid with light collected from APEX's LABOCA camera, which can detect the heat coming from dust.
