The Tiniest Space Telescope
This morning, BRITE (BRight Target Explorer) launched into space from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, India. BRITE is a nano-satellite, not quite 8-inches in diameter, built at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies. While most nano-sats have focused on the ground, BRITE is the first of its kind used for astronomy, measuring the brightness of stars. The satellite was launched with a twin, which was assembled in Austria, and will eventually be joined by four more.
