Five Years Aloft

The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, near Dulles International Airport in northern Virginia, celebrates its fifth anniversary this weekend. The museum is shown lit for a gala marking the occasion on Wednesday, December 3. The exterior was bathed in pastel hues thanks to the handy work of the museum's lighting specialist David Adcock, who was assisted by Robin Lyttle of Lighting by Lyttle in Basye, Virginia. The lighting was a first for the center, and required FAA approval due to the Dulles runways nearby. Among the museum's show pieces are a Concorde, an SR-71 Blackbird, the B-29 Enola Gay, and the Space Shuttle Enterprise. Admission is free, seven days a week, and parking costs $12.00.
