Electromagnetic Catapult Test
Engineers test a prototype of an electromagnetic catapult at the U.S. Naval Air Warfare Center in Lakehurst, New Jersey. Powered by electromagnetic energy, the prototype can accelerate test articles (massive metal frames on wheels) to 165 mph in three-quarters of a second on a track just 100 feet long. Electromagnetic catapults will eventually replace the Navy’s current steam-powered aircraft launchers. (01:47)

That was just bloody awesome. I was a member of the deck crew on the old HMAS MELBOURNE ( Royal Australian Navy) and the old steam system worked...well it just barely did the job. Very good to see some new technology coming to the fore. Good work.

WOW THIS IS AWESOME! and quite a coincedence! I was just at an amusement park here in Utah, where they have a ride called "The Wicked" it has electromagnet technology to make the ride go from 0 to REAL DAMN FAST in a hurry, while I was on it, I thought about my days in the Navy and the first time I took a cat shot, I suddenly thought "why don't they replace those old steam cats wtih this technology? and now here it is? I am impressed!
