The East Coast at Night

The sprawl of major metropolitan areas, the lights on oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, and the northern aurora are all visible in this sequence of images shot by the astronauts on the International Space Station on January 29. The time-lapse is speeded up slightly more than 11x: the pass actually took 15 minutes, beginning over Central America and heading northeast. (1:20)

Think about the amazingness / awesomeness of what you're looking at here.
This makes me so grateful of the many benefits of living in the greatest country on Earth!
What a shame that our space program is being cut by politics. Short-term thinking . . . so sad.

This is absolutely amazing...what's fun is to look at the different areas of brightness over the US and try to figure out where the different cities are by looking at the outline of the country. I especially love locating area of interest to me here in NC, i.e., the Outer Banks off the coast of NC, the other larger cities of the country, ie, New York City, Memphis, Norfolk, the DC area,Houston, LA, Chicago, etc. A great learning tool for those of us that aren't that familiar with our geography. See how many you can correctly identify!

Absolutely beautiful. Thank you to the astronauts for filming and sharing. Thank you to Air & Space for posting.

Nice view.

I tried to share this, but when the link in FB is clicked on, there is a redirect, and the link doesn't work. EDITORS' REPLY: It was down temporarily. Try again; should work now.

Wow!

Absolutely fascinating.

Fascinating view of the energy use and light pollution. Very interesting to see how "dark" Maine is.

Really makes you feel pretty small dosen't it.So saddened to see our space program dismantled while we give away so much to those that hate us for our spirit and vision. Thanks to ALL who made this possible.

It was great! Fun and interesting to pick out areas that you recognize. I sailed the east coast from Key West to Boston at about 100 miles offshore. Thank you to the astronauts and the people at Air & Space.

amazing & awe inspiring - what a lot of megawatts ! interesting to see the aurora brightening as the light pollution diminishes northwards...

thanks to the astronauts & the techies at Air & Space

thanks & regards KM

Would like to see in REAL time.
No thunderstorms?
Thank you for posting this.
