Solar scientists have long been trying to understand the mechanism of sunspots. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory has now provided six years of observations, enough to show a surprising result: The magnetic activity that rises up from the solar interior to become a sunspot on the surface moves almost four times slower than predicted.
