The next generation of geosynchronous satellites operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, GOES-R, heads to orbit November 4. GOES spacecraft have been the backbone of weather research since 1974; hurricane monitoring is just one part of GOES‑R’s mission. On November 21, the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System, or CYGNESS, launches. These eight smallsats (one is below) will study the inner core of hurricanes.
