2nd Annual Air & Space Photo Contest
The Collings Foundation B-17 returning from flight with WWII veterans on board during a tour stop in Fort Collins, Colorado, July 6, 2013.

"The Collings Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving the flying heritage of World War II, had a tour stop in Fort Collins in the summer of 2012," says Unger. "It was a beautiful day to admire the old bombers and P-51s, so I loaded up my camera gear and flew my little airplane over to meet the big ones. At the end of the afternoon, just as I was preparing to depart, a small rain shower moved in. I was doing a pre-flight engine and systems check before taking off, when I saw the Collings Foundation B-17 taxiing for takeoff. The image was one of timelessness; this burly airplane was headed out on one more mission, always ready to serve, just like the men who flew and crewed these birds. It was a beautiful moment because on this day, World War II pilots and crews were flying in that bomber as passengers, in peacetime, and close to home."
