5th Annual Air & Space Photo Contest
Pilot Primes Wright R-1820 Radial Engine in FM-2 Wildcat (N5833)

Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day and associated with the Arsenal of Democracy Flyover, the day after the Flyover the Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center held Fly-In to Victory Day: A Celebration of the End of World War II in Europe. This FM-2 Wildcat, built in 1945, participated in the Fly-In. The plane is currently owned by the Commemorative Air Force. It is painted to match a Martlet VI flown by World War II New Zealand pilot Allen Burgham with the 835 Naval Air Squadron of the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm. After a day spent allowing vistors to view the plane up close, the pilot primes the engine so they can leave.
